Nova: IBERGRID 2019: Delivering Innovative Computing and Data services to Researchers

The 10th Iberian Grid Conference will take place in Santiago de Compostela, from September 23rd to 26th, hosted by CESGA.

The conference topics will be centered on the development and delivery of innovative computing and data services to researchers.

Following this spirit, on Thursday 26th the project EOSC-synergy organizes, along with its kick off meeting, a one-day tutorial dedicated to introduce the usage of basic and innovative tools oriented to support computing and data processing on Cloud infrastructures. The attendance to the tutorial will be free of charge for those registered in IBERGRID 2019. A certificate will be issued to the attendants. More information on the tutorial content will follow in the upcoming weeks.

This is the list of tutorials and hands-on sessions in IBERGRID 2019:

  • On Tuesday 24th of September the INDIGO-Datacloud sponsors special hands-on sessions oriented to software developers and service providers, dedicated to Federated Authorization & Authentication, and on Distributed Data Management tools. The later includes a Hackaton on OneData.
  • On Wednesday 25th of September, CSIC Quantum Technologies platform will deliver a tutorial dedicated to application integration and usage of Quantum Computing systems. In particular the tutorial will focus on the usage of the IBM Q computer.
  • On Thursday 26th of September we will deliver a tutorial on Innovative Computing and Data Processing tools for Researchers.

Nova: Taller Big Data: Usando Spark 2

El CESGA celebrará el del 16 al 19 de julio un taller Big Data donde se explicarán los conceptos básicos de Apache Spark.  El taller será eminentemente práctico y los asistentes tendrán que resolver problemas diversos utilizando Spark. 

Al final del curso los asistentes tendrán los conocimientos necesarios para comenzar a utilizar Spark en sus tareas cotidianas de análisis de datos.

Fecha y hora: del 16 al 19 de julio en horario de mañana de 10:00h. a 14:00h.
Lugar: CESGA, Avda. de Vigo s/n - Campus Vida - Santiago de compostela.
Destinatarios: El taller está destinado a usuarios de la plataforma Big Data que deseen aprender a utilizar Spark 2.

Nova: Reunión de trabajo del proyecto europeo Oceans. RA/VR para alfabetización marina.

El próximo día 20 de junio se reúne en el Cesga el consorcio del proyecto europeo OCEANS ("Ocean Connections: Developing Ocean Literacy through Creative Digital Pedagogies"), coordinado por la Universidad de Exeter (UK), y que cuenta con 8 socios europeos (universidadades, acuarios y escuelas) de Gran Bretaña, Dinamarca y España. Por la parte española / gallega, participa el Acuario Finisterrae (Concello da Coruña), y el CPI O Cruce. El Cesga tiene el papel de socio tecnológico del proyecto.

Este proyecto educativo Erasmus+ tiene el objetivo de explorar las potencialidades de las pedagogías creativas y herramientas de Realidad Virtual y Aumentada en la educación en ciencias, en concreto para reforzar la alfabetización marina.

El Cesga lidera el paquete tecnológico que propondrá y dará soporte a la experimentación con materiales y herramientas de Realidad Virtual y Mixta, teniendo en cuenta el contexto y posibilidades de desarrollo en el marco del proyecto piloto. Durante el mismo, se diseñarán y llevarán a cabo diversas actividades escolares en el aula y los tres acuarios participantes, que se analizarán para analizar el uso y potencialidades de estas pedagogías creativas y herramientas tecnológicas.

Nova: HOW CAN TIO2 BE CONVERTED INTO A NOVEL VISIBLE LIGHT PHOTO-ACTIVE MATERIAL?

Fundamental and applied research comes together via international networking, using the facilities of the CESGA Super-Computer Center (Spain), the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), and the special synthesis technique of subnanometer-sized metal clusters by the company NANOGAP: de Lara-Castells et al. [1] address the question how a special surface treatment can change the optical properties of TiO2. This compound is a semiconductor material which is known to many as a bright white pigment used in numerous applications ranging from paint over sunscreens and even toothpaste. In skincare products, titanium dioxide is often used due to its ability to adsorb UV light, the high-energy part of the solar spectrum.

Now, these excellent adsorption properties triggered the following thoughts: Can this adsorption be somehow improved even further?. Can one take advantage of this semiconductor to somehow harvest more of the energy the sun provides, and is there a chance to directly steer this energy into chemical reactions?.

Nova: CESGA’s TRAFAIR project was awarded Forum Pa at Rome

The Trafair Project has been awarded at the Pa Forum in Rome today with the "Sustainable PA Award, 100 projects to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda".

The project TRAFAIR - Understanding Traffic Flows to Improve Air Quality (https://www.cesga.es/en/investigacion/proyectos/Proyecto?id=736), co-funded by the European Community and in which CESGA participates, arose from the need of large cities to check air quality quickly and efficiently with a system that allows to take decisions that improve said quality benefiting citizens, businesses and administrations.

The objectives of this project are to provide estimates of air pollution in the city and to develop a prediction service based on the specific meteorology of the area and on the actual traffic flows that move through the city, in addition to publishing said data to the public.

These objectives are what have made TRAFAIR win the "Sustainable PA Award - 100 projects to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda", initiative promoted by FPA in collaboration with ASVIS (Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development) in the event FORUM PA 2019.
